Should it not be “ifs, ands or buts”? <br /><br />I ask because the use of apostrophes to create plural nouns has reached epidemic proportions. At the store, I'll see a sign that reads, “Banana’s 59 cents/lb” or “All CD’s on sale”. Maybe in the case of “if’s, and’s or but’s”, the apostrophes are necessary and proper.
