After receiving a number of notifications in the email box this morning, I found out how to delete my presence on Facebook. It's not that some of the people involved in these notifications are bad or boring. Some of them I enjoy hearing from or corresponding with. But doing so in a Facebook setting is just too trivial, however popular.
Some of the people live right across the street from me. Some of the people live at great distances. It's nice to make contact, but Facebook strikes me as a poor medium ... all saddle and no horse ... pretending to 'connect' people when in fact it merely asserts superficiality and distance. If Facebook is the best anyone can do, well, I don't think it's the best anyone can do.
I've never made a secret of my email address and my name is in the phone book. That strikes me as enough.

A-men to that, sorry I ever got roped into the sumbitch.
ReplyDeleteNice! I have never even thought about going on facebook wouldn't know where to begin and something I saw the other day confirmed my underlying antipathy; the local TV station reported (must have been a very slow day!) that a certain lady, who had just given birth, had decided to use facebook medium instead of sending out birth announcements. No big deal you might say as I did, then the interviewer just happened to casually mention this new mom had 700 facebook "friends".But that wasn't the story; the story was the new (?) use of facebook for such things. That part I didn't even ponder as I was still wrestling with the idea of having 700 friends!! I know I am odd and probably for that reason can't count 7 people i would need to be on constant contact with for my every Minuteman of my pathetic life never mind having 700! what a burden!!
ReplyDeletesorry....don't know where "Minuteman" came from!! Maybe it fits better than what I intended to type..."minutia"!!!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I would very much like to disobey and ignore your post, I personally took a look at the situation and decided that since I intend to read your blog and get good advice out of it, I perhaps should follow suit when I see a post like that.
ReplyDeleteSayonara Facebook for me too.
I actually loved facebook. so, goodbye.
