There is something simultaneously grotesque and heartening about a group of billionaires getting together to discuss how to give their money away. No man or woman who is rich ever got that way by being nice. So, in one sense, the gathering in Tucson, Ariz., was a gathering of thieves -- people who had slit a lot of throats and gouged out a lot of eyeballs in order to get where they had gotten.
And yet the underlying whisper of the gathering is the same as it might be for anyone, billionaire or otherwise: How valuable can a thing be if you are unwilling to give it away? Christians may put an icing on this cake by suggesting "it is more blessed to give than to receive," but a blessing and a couple of bucks will get you a bus ride. I'd call the ability to give it away a common-sense matter, something that simply works better.
If you love it, learn in your heart to give it away. Things work better that way -- they are lighter and carry with them inevitable smiles.
