a world where people buy things

.
How dispiriting to live in a world where people buy things.

I'm not just talking about the acquisitive spirit that leads the 'virtuous' to emulate Thoreau with their well-oiled tongues. That's hardly better than the Rodeo Drive stud muffins and boobilicious babes who parade their wares.

But it's dispiriting in the same way it might be dispiriting to live in a world where Spanish Influenza claimed something more than 50 million and infected 500 million ... and you couldn't see it, taste it, avoid it ... it was all around you. Killing one-third of the globe's population wasn't really talked about ... but it was real enough ... just like living in a world where people buy things.

Although it is the mind that becomes befogged in a merchandiser's world, still it can be dispiriting to be constantly warding off the assholes of our own minds.

Buying things. Owning things. And then buying more because what you bought in the first place has no staying power, no peace, no satisfaction that lasts.

Stuff ... stuff and the people who revel in stuff ... it's like pollution rolling east from Ohio ... no one escapes.

I guess the only bit of luck involved is recognizing that if stuff doesn't cut it, what will?
