In a move that may leave stock holders shuddering, India has quietly put in place a $5.4 billion program to give its population free generic drugs. So far, according to a Reuters story, the country has actually ponied up about $1 billion, but such a thought, born in the halls of politics, strikes me as a pleasant eye-opener. How un-Amurican!
The notion of "everything for everybody" is a thought best reserved for idealists and other teenagers. But the idea of "some things for everybody" seems politically and socially responsible to me. As the Somali intelligence officer remarked when asked about rising rates of piracy off his shores, "If you do not share your wealth with us, we will share our poverty with you."
