In the early morning sun, outside the porch door and not ten feet from where I was sitting, a lady cardinal perched on the tip-top of a six-foot arbor vitae.
The tree was so green in the light.
The orange bill and grey feathers were so vivid.
Beauty on the hoof.
Before I could stop myself, I said, "good morning."
She cocked her head once at the sound ... and promptly flew away.
