news that caught my eye

.
And in the news that caught my eye ....

-- States with less religious participation tend to give less to charity, according to a report.

-- Guantanamo Bay inmates and the lawyers hired to defend them are not allowed to talk about the 'harsh interrogation techniques' they may consider torture.

-- A hand-wringing Congress that may claim to have America's best interests at heart is awash in soulful wails about the impact budget cuts may have after Jan. 2. In the meantime, the children of service men and women -- the ones Congress is unwilling to call anything other than "heroes" -- are already feeling the pinch.

-- After a night of jelly-fish stings and storms, Diana Nyad, 62, continues her 103-mile swim from Cuba to the United States. Nyad turns 63 on Wednesday.

-- And in Pakistan, the president has ordered an investigation into the case of a girl, possibly as young as 11, who suffers from mental disabilities but was arrested in a Christian area and accused of  desecrating the Koran. "Officials said the girl could not properly answer police questions. Her parents have been taken into protective custody following threats."

And there are lots of wars and deaths and massive depredations, of course.

  1. “I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people, until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the republic destroyed.”

    – Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States
