a wider faith

.
I have a number of acquaintances who have been around the spiritual block. I'm not talking about people who have read a lot of books and can dispense a variety of wise nostrums with feigned or unfeigned sincerity, but rather people who have actually tried things out a bit, put their own feet to the fire, and, bearing the scars of success or failure, have moved along into a still-convinced-but-slightly-less-awe-struck way of being.

Some of these people have grey hair and sometimes I want to ask them, "Aren't you getting a bit old for a guru?" and suggest, "I think it's time to adopt a wider faith."

But it's a pointless bit of imagining on my part. You can't talk someone out of his fears or loves or needs or aversions. The best you can do is to urge them on, and hope that they will come to the end of their own railroad track ... debark ... and have a doughnut and a cup of coffee.
