visceral love

.
The pope's butler was convicted today of stealing papal documents. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, a reduction of the three-year term that might have been imposed.

Paolo Gabriele told the church court "I do not feel like a thief" and added that he did what he had done out of a "visceral love" for the church.

Paolo Gabriele
Gabriele was accused of stealing the pope's private correspondence and passing it on to journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose book revealed the intrigue, petty infighting and allegations of corruption and homosexual liaisons that plague the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church.

A papal pardon is widely expected. Who would know better than the Catholic Church what impact  martyrs can have?

And, associatively, how interesting that those who yowl for "transparency" are seldom willing to apply the same yardstick to their own doings: Somehow, my secrets are always more compelling and worthy than your secrets.
