forget about it

.
Sometimes I wonder if anyone's most fervent wish -- the wish that might lay all confusions and uncertainties and sorrows to rest -- isn't just the capacity to "forget about it!"

This morning, for example, I realized that two small matters had been resolved and I could forget about them. One was a letter to the editor I sent to the local paper and wanted to see published. It was. The other was a rewrite of a bio that had been posted on the Internet site, "Sweeping Zen." Aside from its typos, I wanted to rewrite the sentiments. I did and, with a small nudge, Adam Tebbe, the proprietor of Sweeping Zen, was good enough to replace the earlier version with a later one ... and I could forget about it.

These two small matters hardly matched the worries I could bring to bear when it came to finding the money to pay the mortgage or worrying about my aging mother's circumstances, but they added some small weight to a knapsack that could feel pretty heavy at times.

Who would I be without my worries? Those worries may be hellish at times, but the prospect of being without them -- of being free and clear of all worries -- is pretty frightening on closer inspection.

"Forget about it" may suggest sensibly that worrying about what can't currently be addressed is pretty silly, but not worrying...? Not-worrying would be ... uhhhh ... uhhhh... eek! The Boy Scouts may trumpet the virtues of being "prepared," but being prepared for the future is not perfectly possible. It's almost as idiotic as business drones who believe in "multi-tasking."

Forget about it?

Forget about it!
