An email from England today came from a fellow who had likewise studied with my Zen teacher, Kyudo Nakagawa Roshi. In that email, he retailed the following tale:
One lunchtime mid-way through a week long sesshin, a spokesman for
the Dalai Lama (who was in town at the time) called to say that his
holiness was wanting to visit Buddhist centres that had established
themselves in the West.
"I'm very sorry" said Kyudo "but we are in the middle of sesshin, not to be disturbed"
"But he's a very holy man" said the spokesman.
"We have room full of holy men here! " responded Roshi.
