Sometimes I think the encouragement "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" should be rewritten to read, "If at first you don't succeed, find another way to fuck things up."
Case in point, as reported by Reuters:
Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood warns that a U.N. declaration on women's rights could destroy society by allowing a woman to travel, work and use contraception without her husband's approval and letting her control family spending.Declarations invariably lead to imperfect results, but when the depredations that preceded those declarations become too apparent and too overwhelming, then the time for a less-imperfect imperfection seems warranted ... a matter of common sense and common decency.
If Muslim women had an equal share of power and control in the society they help to bind, would that society be more or less out of synch with the facts on the ground? Would things be any more or less fucked up? As far as I can see, women are people too and as such are as subject to fuck-ups as men.
Is there some reason -- among Muslims or any other group -- not to share this wealth and the responsibility that goes with it?
