deconstructing America's drones
Passed along in email today was this stunning documentary about American drone strikes in Pakistan. My reaction went beyond shame for the country I belong to and have helped elect. The pure insanity of creating what you claim to want to eradicate is too -- literally -- stunning. Obscene and crazy ... and there's a lot of money to be made. At what point did my country allow itself to cross some bright line between those who actually did harm and those who might do harm?
At what point did so-called intelligence rely solely on informants who were paid to report and hence might be inclined to report ... something... for money? At what point did the media of my country shrug off responsibility and hence credibility and report without examination the sound bites issued by my government ... saying things like "high value target" without substantive and transparent examination or demurrer? At what point did some vestige of humanity get sold to the highest bidder and most artful propagandist?
Killing people. Killing families. Decimating social fabric. Instilling a 24/7 fear. Was there ever a 'terrorist' who could do more than this? I know a lot of cuss words, but I can find no cuss word for this unadulterated, self-important, cruel-for-the-sake-of-cruelty idiocy. But don't listen to me ... listen to the people who were and remain there: Christ! I am so sorry!
