Mary Beard interview

Every now and then I see a story about someone I would like to know ... not often ... and Mary Beard is one such person. A shit-kickin' woman.

  1. How do you come across these things?
And as reward for reading the article (I enjoyed it) I found another one in the same issue on authors and reading, with wonderful quotes. I don't have enough time as it is: this is a mixed blessing.

  2. Judith -- I read, with increasing sloppiness, various news wires -- an old habit that is too old to break. I just liked this sassy, saucy broad and half wished I could sit down and compare notes ... another silly pipe dream that resolves itself in a small puddle of being glad such a person is on the face of the earth.

  3. I'd like to ask her what she thought of Will and Ariel Durant's work, The Story of Civilization. They left the military tales as asides in favor of what art, writing, and thinking was going on that influenced the laws and culture of the time.

It was a sweeping XI volume work most historians eschewed as too generalized and philosophical. It does cover a broad span of time from primitive societies to the age of napoleon. And it does focus on western civilization, sweeping most of east asia into one volume.

But i'm a fan and think it should be required reading. And i'd be curious to know what she thought of it. Even at the risk of hearing how misguided my devotion may be.
