Sluicing gently upwards out of the realm of sleep today came a small epiphany: Things do not need to be important.
"Epiphany" is a five-dollar word that suggests joy or sorrow, but there was none of that. It was just a realization of sorts. Importance was simply not necessary.
Do something or do nothing, but importance is just not that important.
It felt, for a couple of moments, like a rock had been lifted from a weighty backpack.

Hindsight supports that for me. My greatest struggles and triumphs count for little now. So what, who cares and big deal.
ReplyDeleteI used to want to have epiphanies, intuitive understandings of the essential nature of ... something or everything.
ReplyDeleteThere was a supervisor at work who had a poster on one wal that said, "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff". She said it was from a book she liked. I thought it was a good sentiment. I also thought it was ironic in context. She, of course, was petty, mean spirited and she held prayer meetings in her office before the official workday began asking God for strength and wisdom. Did I say she was petty and mean spirited?
I have come to distrust epiphanies. My own and those of others. If for no other reason is that while they feel so shout-it-from-the-mountaintop generally applicable they are inevitably just small incomplete personal emotionally charged notions.
Enjoy the wonder.
But don't be too surprised or get too annoyed when somebody reacts to your epiphany with something like, "Duh!"
I look forward to your "Meditations on Importance."
