From the doorway of the porch, up about seven feet and sitting on an in-coming telephone line, a cardinal sat and chirped out his message into the rainy skies this morning.
It was a fierce and persistent call as it seemed to me. I could see the feathers at the nape of his neck rise slightly with each exhalation, each call, each bit of life.
I still don't know where a creature that small finds the enormousness of his own voice. Where does it come from? I don't know and never will ... but I can enjoy my amazement.
