bar-coded at birth

.
... And in the 'unsettling ideas' column, there is a suggestion, put forward as a speculative, world-changing idea, that every individual be bar-coded at birth.

A part of me shudders at the number of people who might think this was a good idea.

  1. Right concern.

    Wrong technology.

An RFID chip inserted under the skin will reveal all to whomever has the right scanner.

(You do have blocking material like aluminum foil in your wallet or sleeves on your cards to protect the data on your <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVerEMooek8>RFID</a> in your credit and debit cards? Scanners that can read the info on the chips on the cards can be had for about $100.00; what a return on investment!)

The FDA has already approved RFID chips that can be inserted under the skin. There have already been folks who went ahead with having the chips inserted. The technology continues to evolve. Just last month a company called HID Global announced yet another innovation.
