"Solomon Grundy"

Like some mental Tic Tac, the old English nursery rhyme walked across my mind's tongue this morning ... zippy, meaningful and meaningless  -- "Solomon Grundy."

Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday.
And that was the end,
Of Solomon Grundy.
As far as I know, the ditty has not been revised or gussied up in the politically-correct ways the 'caring' can impose when they deem such small tales to be too direct or violent for the young ears which already hear the trumpets and confusions of life.

Sometimes I think our greatest salvation lies in not being saved by our most brightly-lit salvors.

  1. There was a rock band back in the '70s that called themselves "Solomon Grundy".

I like a good gritty ditty. Here's one I grew up with a dash of violence that has confusion as its theme.

One bright day, in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight.
Back to back, they faced each other,
Pulled out swords and shot each other.
A deaf policeman heard the noise.
Went and shot the two dead boys.
If you don't believe this lie, it's true.
Ask the blind man, he saw it too!

Heck, I am surprised "Three Blind Mice" hasn't gotten PETA's attention yet! LOL!

  2. And another, LuzdelaLuna --

    O, McGinty is dead
    And McCarty don't know it.
    McCarty is dead
    And McGinty don't know it.
    They're both together
    Upon the bed
    And neither one knows
    If the other is dead.

  3. Why is death humor fun? I guess there is a sense of relief from what causes us anxiety when we make fun of it. Therefore...

There was a man from Nantucket...

    ;)

  4. Luz -- "therefore????" What has the juicy limerick about Nantucket got to do with "anxiety" about death?

Mind you, being a male, I can see the "sense of relief" aspect. :)

  5. LOL! Well, I think birth, death and sex (maybe income taxes as well) are sources of anxiety...but maybe I'm wrong. ;)
