What parent would not viscerally recoil at the story about the deaths of some 22 Indian children who had eaten a free meal at school? Dozens of others were sickened. There have been riots. What was provided and trusted as nourishment was apparently tainted with fatal amounts of pesticide. It is sickening.
A lie that kills my children ... what parent would not recoil?
If a government nourishes its people with self-important tales that inspire fear and violence -- tales that send its children home in body bags -- how does this differ from the poisoning of those who long for something as life-sustaining and peaceful as a child's meal and a child's education?
Maybe it's "apples and oranges," but I'd say it's pretty much the same bitter fruit.
