richly destitute

.
The English author George Orwell once observed -- was it in "Down and Out in Paris and London?" I can't remember -- that there is no such thing a philosopher who operates on an empty stomach. Observing, quantifying, and finding solutions to discomfort requires a level of comfort ... which is often disclaimed or ignored.

What brought this to mind was the statement by Ann Romney, wife of the very well-heeled Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, that "I don't even consider myself wealthy." It's a luxury she can afford, even if others cannot.

The Dalai Lama once observed that "everyone wants to be happy." How could anyone want to be happy without, in one form or another, already being happy ... already operating on a full stomach?
