present excitements, future...?

Sitting on the porch that is chock-a-block with old stuff and new -- a lot of stuff -- my eye lit this morning on a neat-and-tidy box grizzled with dust. Inside, still new as an unsharpened pencil, were cards that I had had printed up at one time -- indicators of the small zendo out behind the house.

The fact that there were so many still in the box stood testimony to the fact that having them printed up in the first place was largely a waste of money.

What had I been thinking?!

A front side a back side and voila, there was an identity, slick and correct as a Japanese business man.

As stupidities go, it was far from my worst, but still, it was a reminder that present excitements rarely translate into future usefulness.
