Last evening, my younger son, whose kindness I admire, went over to a friend's house to schmooze and be close. His friend's father had died and, although the man had had cancer and the matter was not surprising, still there was the reality to cope with.
Five minutes ago, my daughter called from Pennsylvania to say that her fiance's father had had a stroke. A man in his 50's ... it was unexpected. My daughter was headed to the hospital with her fiance.
Bad news arouses attention.
Good news arouses attention.
What happens to all that attention when there is no 'news?'
