the 'stupid' is in the details

.
In abusive economic times, it may be a step up from the Depression-era tactic of throwing a brick through a store window, getting arrested and thus assuring a couple of hot meals and a roof over your head, but it's not much of a step, especially if it's not carried out with care:

A 47-year-old man who had lost his job and increased the amount on his life insurance policy went missing last week in the waters off Jones Beach in New York. An intensive search turned up nothing. Then Raymond Roth was picked up for speeding in South Carolina and his wife discovered 'post-mortem' emails from her husband to her son, instructing him how to deal with various papers, including a last will and testament.

It reminds me of a humorous riff from a woman comedian I once saw on TV. In several segments, she outlined very human situations in which the protagonist came to a ludicrous conclusion. The comedian ended each segment with an explosive, "What the hell's the matter with you!?"
