can you identify this medal?

Pictured blow are the front and back of a medal that was among my mother's effects. I assume, but don't know, that it belonged to my grandfather (my mother's father). He was a captain in World War I, though where he served in Europe I am not sure. I figure the medal -- if that's what it is -- is either English or French. Any help appreciated.

  1. I was able to identify it as a German Schwarzburg-Sonderhausen, Honour Cross.

Here is one that was sold online:

    And here is another:

  2. Smarti -- Thank you for the research. It seems to be on the right track, though the one I have seems to be silver and I will try to find out precisely why it might be awarded. "German" narrows things nicely. Medals are strange things.

  3. Indeed. I thought at first it might be Scottish because of the rampant lion. There is also a Belgian medal, for the Order of Leopold, that looks a little similar. I know nothing about medals, but I'm pretty good with Google. :)

  4. Smarti -- I really do appreciate your effort even if, as time passes, I'm not sure how much I really care. Oh well, someone looked a little bigger and a little better while the rest of us practice our genuflections.
