getting an education

.
On Saturday, while standing on the peace picket line, a professor of marketing told me that the majority of his college students got their world news from ESPN -- the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network seen on US television.

On Sunday, I was gabbing on the phone with Jonathan, an old friend who teaches English at a small college in Boston. When I asked him how the classes were going, he said the undergraduates were the usual mixed bag, but that the graduate students could sometimes bring him down. When Jonathan asked one prospective grad student what he read, the student replied, "I don't read much of anything. I just want to write."

Welcome to the Third World.
