dearly-held beliefs

.
Betraying the principles of the country to which he belongs, an American pastor burned a copy of the Koran on March 20 after holding a mock trial and finding the book guilty of crimes against humanity. Yesterday and the day before, there were deaths in Afghanistan as a result:

At least one person has been killed and 16 injured in a third day of protests in Afghanistan over the burning of a Koran in the US last month.
Hundreds of demonstrators marched in Kandahar, Jalalabad and other areas on Sunday.
On Friday, 14 people, including seven UN staff, were killed in Mazar-e Sharif after similar protests. -- BBC report.

What kind of a nitwit perpetrates such thoughtless idiocy? Answer -- lots of kinds of nitwits. But the incident ought to serve as some kind of warning to all those with dearly-held beliefs. Beliefs may be praised as wondrous and useful, but they are conflagrations waiting to happen. This is not something one man can teach another, but it is something individuals should make every effort to teach themselves.
