It's a little too cutsey-wootsy for my taste, but if it is true, as I think it is, that "meaning" just means "ME-aning" -- just means me -- then the Zen teacher Dogen's words take on some force:
To study the way is to study the self.
To study the self is to forget the self.
To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things.
To be enlightened by all things is to cast off the body and mind.... Even the traces of enlightenment are wiped out, and life with traceless enlightenment goes on forever and ever.
I wonder if Dogen ever wondered if his words could possibly have some meaning.
