a lady cardinal

.
In the early morning sun, outside the porch door and not ten feet from where I was sitting, a lady cardinal perched on the tip-top of a six-foot arbor vitae.

The tree was so green in the light.

The orange bill and grey feathers were so vivid.

Beauty on the hoof.

Before I could stop myself, I said, "good morning."

She cocked her head once at the sound ... and promptly flew away.
