Patriots' Day

.
In the Midwest, residents are licking their wounds after an onslaught of severe weather left five dead in a swath from Kansas to Minnesota. The damage is no joke.

Somewhere or other, candidates for the presidency of the United States and their deep-pocket backers are no doubt planning speeches about the deficit or their philosophical differences or where to start the next war and how they will make America a more habitable and righteous nation.

Today is "Patriots' Day" where I live, a theoretical recollection of the Revolutionary War battles at Lexington and Concord. These days patriots are people who call themselves "patriots." They have lapel-pin flags to 'prove' it.

It is hard not to see the aptness of the observation, "There will always be an asshole."
