military returns to Harvard

.
In hard times, in hard-scrabble environments, a life in the military was always an escape route -- a way to assure an income, clothes to wear and a certain security within sometimes dangerous circumstances. I had a friend in basic training who was both happy for a pair of shoes and, at 19, had to have all his teeth pulled out because toothbrushes, while possible, were rare where he came from.

Now the military has extended its allure with a return to Harvard University, one of the great and often liberal educational institutions in the United States.

Absent from campus since 1971, the Army and Navy began Reserve Officers' Training Corps began training this week. In an insecure environment that shows every sign of relying on fear and war, why not?
