your justice system?

Passed along in email was the story of an unarmed black man from Brooklyn who was shot at by two police officers near Times Square on Sept. 14.

Glenn Broadnax
The cops missed Glenn Broadnax, 35, but hit two bystanders. Broadnax was initially cited on misdemeanor charges of menacing, drug possession and resisting arrest. But the district attorney got a grand jury to up the ante to a charge of assault, which carries a 25-year maximum term.
"The defendant is the one that created the situation that injured innocent bystanders," said an assistant district attorney, Shannon Lucey.
Here's the New York Times version.
Glenn Broadnax, a 35-year-old black man from Brooklyn, was unarmed on the night of September 14 when NYPD officers shot at him in the middle of Times Square, striking two bystanders.

Instead of apologizing, the New York Times reports that the city has charged Broadnax ”with assault, on the theory that he was responsible for bullet wounds suffered by two bystanders.”
Broadnax was emotionally disturbed and dodging cars in the middle of the street when officers say he reached into his pocket to grab what they believed was a weapon, prompting them to open fire. His lawyers says he was reaching for his wallet.

  1. Can't wait until Star Trek's Phasers with Stun and Heavy Stun setting become reality so we don't have poorly cops hired on the cheap killing innocents and then well intentioned but idiot DAs tyrin' to protect the cops.

  2. Re: Poorly trained? Possibly, but the shooters were inexperienced. We are being told that one of the cops has been on the force for about 18 months and the other three years.

The video I saw on TV made the NYPD look like a Hapless but still Murderous bunch of Keystone Cops. I saw more of the video from cell phones the day of.

By the time CBS showed up it was already over:

I have no expertise in law enforcement but it seems clear to me that the use of guns was completely inappropriate for dealing with an insane man in the crowded Times Square area. this clearly was not a hostage situation.

I wonder if the situation will change for Glenn Broadnax once d'Blasio becomes mayor.

Good riddance to Bloomberg and if they're Black or Brown shoot first forget about it later polcies. This was not the first time a situation like the Times Square incident happened. Stop and Frisk was just the tip of the racist policing iceberg.

  3. Not unique to the US.
There is a case going through British courts at the moment..a young black guy shot dead in a car. Police say he pulled a gun. Witnesses from a nearby high rise apartment block say it was a mobile phone (cell phone )..and that the police brought the gun with them..

  4. Just to add. British police are not armed, so an armed response unit had been brought in. It raises the prospect that it was an execution.
