I have a friend who makes a living with his art. He prefers to call it play rather than work. And he doesn't seem to be a tortured artist seeking self knowledge, but he does seem aware of the notion. His take was that a proper artist will see how far out s/he can go without blowing their credibility, i suppose in the market place or among critics, dunno. I look at these crochet hockey masks and think they've lost credibility. But then i suppose i'm not their market target.
