Happiness relies on nothing else
Whereas
Sorrow invariably relies on something else.
And since there is nothing else, what the heck does sorrow think it's doing?
Or happiness either, for that matter?
I wouldn't discount brain chemistry. Depression is frequently about nothing but a genetic failure to produce the chemistry we consider normal.
